Project Description

This discussion focused on the urgent need to introduce a stronger licensing system for young drivers in the UK – one designed to protect them during their most vulnerable months on the road, through upskilling, not restriction. This webinar looked to reframe the conversation around licensing reform – shifting the focus from what might be ‘taken away’ to what stronger licensing gives: safer young drivers, fewer crashes and lasting public benefit.

The Webinar was broadcast live on Tuesday 8 July at 14:00

Co-chaired by Police and Crime Commissioners Joy Allen (Durham) and Philip Seccombe (Warwickshire), the webinar explored how a form of Graduated Driving Licensing (GDL) – which has reduced fatal and serious crashes by 20-40% in other countries – could dramatically reduce the emotional, societal and financial costs of road crashes involving young drivers.

Hear from leading voices – including bereaved father and road safety policy expert Dr Ian Greenwood on preventing trauma, Dr Rob Török on easing NHS pressures and driving instructor Terry Cook on the necessity of gradual learning for complex skills.

Meet the team from Young Drivers of Canada and hear how their Graduated Driver Licensing in Ontario has brought notable reductions in collisions among novice drivers.

Hear from CC Jo Shiner KPM, Ruth Purdie OBE, Professor Lyndel Bates, Edmund King OBE, Dr Sarah Jones (Public Health Wales) and other experts.

Discover how GDL is a flexible, evidence-based framework, not a one-size-fits-all solution and see the scale of cross-sector support ready to work with Government.

Be among the first to hear about the new national Protect Young Drivers website – soon to launch with the backing of major stakeholders including the NPCC, NFCC, RAC Foundation, TRL and more.

Don’t miss this chance to be part of the movement that puts protecting young drivers first.
