Project Description
Broadcast live on Wednesday 12th March, 2025
Welcome to this webinar on Speed management – it’s the first of four and we’re very pleased to acknowledge the support of RedSpeed International in bringing these events to you. Today we’re looking at various aspects of communication, the role of partnerships in enhancing public awareness campaigns and other critical components of the conversation on speed and speeding. In this webinar we will seek to explain and explore their importance and interrelation.
Effective speed management has numerous benefits:
Crash Prevention – lower speeds provide drivers with more time to recognise and react to hazards, reducing stopping distances and the likelihood of losing vehicle control.
Injury severity reduction – even small reductions in speed significantly decrease the risk of fatal and serious injuries. For instance, a 5% reduction in average speed can reduce fatalities by 20%.
Environmental and health benefits – reduced speeds lead to lower fuel consumption, less air and noise pollution, and improved conditions for pedestrians and cyclists, fostering healthier communities.
Safe System Approach – speed management aligns with broader road safety frameworks by addressing infrastructure, vehicle technology, and behaviour to minimise crash risks.
Key interventions – setting appropriate speed limits, enforcing them, implementing traffic calming measures, and using in-vehicle technologies.
So – do we have right narrative? How well is it working and what do we need more of – or less of – in order to change driver behaviour?
• Emma Kelly – from Road Safety Support on the roles and responsibilities of a road safety partnership
• Fay Cannon – case study on the Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership
• Chris Spinks from Westcotec – successful road safety interventions in the speed arena
• Rebecca Morris – from Vision Zero Communications on revisiting good practice from 20 years ago
• Jon Robertson – from UKROEd on how the new Driver Top-Up programme complements the NDORS courses
