Project Description

Webinar panel discussion, broadcast live: Friday 17 January 2025

James Luckhurst, founder of Project EDWARD, hosted a thought-provoking webinar, kindly supported by Slater + Gordon, exploring the complex and sensitive topic of road death and the pursuit of justice. This event brought together experts, advocates and those personally affected by road tragedies to shed light on the issues surrounding traffic fatalities and their legal consequences.

Slater and Gordon

Our panelists included:

CC Jo Shiner  NPCC Roads Policing
Jon Heath  Senior Coroner for North Yorkshire and York
Raymond Williams  Slater + Gordon (formerly North Wales Police)
Lucy Harrison  RoadPeace
Chris Spinks  Westcotec (former Chief Inspector, Norfolk Police)

As well as acknowledging the immense human cost and the devastating impact on families and communities, we will also examined:

The Legal Perspectives: Understanding the complexities of prosecuting road death cases and looking for a definition of justice in these situations.

Family liaison and victim support: We discussed the crucial role of support services for those bereaved or injured in road crashes

The role of data: How evidence-based strategies can inform both prevention and justice efforts

Safe System Approach: We exploring how a more strategic view of road safety can prevent fatalities and shape our understanding of accountability

We believe this webinar recording offers a unique opportunity to gain insights into a critical aspect of road safety that touches so many families every year. By hearing a range of different perspectives, we will encourage a deeper understanding of what justice means in the context of road deaths – whilst also working collaboratively towards a future with zero road fatalities
