Project Description

Who truly “owns” the road? How can we create a culture where everyone, from drivers to riders to walkers, feels equally respected and safe?

Take a look at the recording of Project EDWARD’s ‘First Friday’ Breakfast Conversation exploring the idea of democratic road use — a concept that calls for shared responsibility, mutual understanding, and fair treatment for all road users.

Our guests bring unique and complementary perspectives. Alan Hiscox will share insight from the British Horse Society’s ongoing work to safeguard equestrians and improve interactions between riders and drivers. He’ll highlight progress made through campaigns like Dead Slow, which marks its 10th anniversary in 2026 and remind us that empathy and awareness can be lifesaving.

Dr Santiago Amietta, whose research at Keele University examines road safety, justice, and social responsibility, will explore what democracy on our roads might look like — and whether our legal, cultural and behavioural norms support or hinder that vision.
